Terms Definitions
CD-rom/DVD-rom drive "A device, either internal or external that enables a computer to read (or write) data on discs."
Scroll Bar Tha bar located at the right side and or bottom of a window that is not large enough to display the entire document.
DVD "Digital Video Disc. Can be used to store large amounts of data, video, and sound files."
Megabyte (MB) A unit of measurement equivalent to 1million bytes.
Network Drive A connection that allows you to access shared files and directories that are usually stored on the server.
Local Printer A printer hooked directly up to your computer.
hardware "Any piece of computer equipment. (Ex. printer, mouse, network card)"
Download "To copy a file from a remote computer ""down"" to your own computer via the network or Internet."
Cursor "The arrow/pointer that moves with the mouse or the blinking line on a document, which marks the next spot where a character will appear."
Mouse A hand-operated electronic device that controls the coordinates of a cursor on your computer screen as you move it around
Hyperlink "A ""clickable"" way to link to another place in the same document or an entirely new document/webpage. Commonly underlined and colored blue on the Internet and help documents."
Copyright "The exclusive rights granted by law for a certain number of yeary to control copies of music, print, video, etc."
Server "A computer, which is linked to, and provides services (ie. file and printer sharing) for other computers (known as clients) on the network. Brown Deer servers are all located at the High School. "
Kilobyte (KB) A unit of measurement equivalent to 1024 bytes.
Wireless Networking without any wires where the communication and data transfer is done over the radio waves.
Memory The space within a computer where information is stored while being actively worked on. Memory is measured in K (kilobytes) MB (megabytes) GB (gigabytes)
Wide Area Network (WAN) Typically, a WAN consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs) with the Internet being the largest.
START Menu "The Start Menu and Start Button are user interface elements in the Microsoft Windows product line, which serve as the central launching point for applications. By default, the Start Button is visible at all times in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. It features the Windows logo and the word ""start"". "
Profiles "A group of individual settings (wallpaper, icons, network drives, etc) based on a specific user. "
Shortcut Icons "Operating Systems allow you to create pointers, or Shortcuts, to your program and data files. The Shortcut icons can be placed on the desktop or stored in other folders. Double clicking a Shortcut is the same as double clicking the original file. However, deleting a Shortcut does not remove the original. Shortcut icons have a small arrow in their lower left corner of the icon."
Ethernet cable "The most common way to connect computers, printers, workstations, and other devices to the school network. Usually is terminated with RJ-45 connector."
Web Browser A browser is an application that provides a way to look at and interact with all the information on the Internet. (Ex. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari (MAC), Netscape)
Search Engine A tool or program which allows keyword searching for relevant sites or information on the Internet.
Gigabyte (GB) A unit of measurement equivalent to approximately 1000 megabytes.
software "Any program that runs on the computer allowing various tasks and commands from the user. (Ex. Microsoft Word, Excel, Kid Pix)"
SPAM email "Unwanted, unsolicited email that is nearly impossible to block 100% of the time."
Workstation Any computer connected to a network from which users interact with software stored on the network.
Hard Copy A paper print out of a document produced on the computer.
USB Flash Drives A small reliable storage device that plugs into any USB port on any computer.
USB "Universal Serial Bus. USB is a ""plug and play"" interface between a computer and add-on devices such camera and microphone. With USB, a device can be added to your computer without having to turn the computer off."
Operating System (OS) A core program that controls and manages the computer making it possible for other programs/applications to run. Windows XP is an example
DeepFreeze "A program the Tech Dept. uses to ""freeze"" all internal computer settings so that on every reboot a ""fresh"" copy of the computer is shown to the user."
Input devices "Any means of entering information or giving commands to a computer. (Mouse, keyboard, stylus pen, scanner)"
Local Area Network (LAN) "Computers that are connected together in the same room and/or building. (See Wide Area Network, WAN)"
Menu Bar "Located at the top of the screen, organized by topic, it lists all the options available in that particular software program."
Desktop "The main background on the computer screen where you can see your ""shortcuts,"" icon, recycle bin, etc."
Peripheral Devices "External devices attached to a the computer such as a printer, "

"3.5"" Floppy" A external and unreliable way to store and hold data with 1.4MB in maximum capacity. Many files are larger than this these days making floppies nearly obsolete.
Icon "A picture representation of a particular object, operation or group of files. Often found on button bar, palettes and toolbars."
Output devices "Any means of getting information from the computer. (Monitor, projector, printer)"
Driver A small program assinged to a specific piece of hardware that allows communication between OS and the hardware.
Central Processing Unit (CPU) "This is the ""brain"" of the entire computer system where all the instructions and logical operations are performed."
Template "A special document that provides basic formating and structure that is never changed by the end user. Every time it is opened, a clean copy is opened."
Folder A means of keeping related files or similar items in one location on a computer.
