Excerpt: ... Abstract Purpose of Media and Cultural Studies In light of the recent negative public portrayals of media and cultural studies as academic disciplines, an analysis of what the disciplines are good for is in order. Media and Cultural Studies are extremely integral disciplines, helping us to understand the way that contemporary global, national and popular culture work, playing large roles in the way that we understand human lives. The emergence of a media culture which "help[s] produce the fabric of everyday life" (Kellner 1995:1), indicates that the study of media and cultural studies is beneficial, as it applies to contemporary culture and society in a way that psychology and sociology do not. While the supposed triviality of studying Eastenders or Finding Nemo has been greatly criticised, the truth that "media culture also provides the materials out of which many people construct their sense of class, of ethnicity and race, of nationality, of sexuality, of 'us' and 'them'" clearly challenges this criticism, ...

Excerpt: ... English 355, summer 2008 Cultural Studies , (Post)Colonialism, & Lucy Historical & Critical Contexts for July 16-23 Discussions NOTE: As you read, remember that: Kincaid is an Antiguan (now living in the U.S.) who has written extensively about the impacts of British colonialism on her home island and culture. The scene with Lucy and the daffodils (pp. 17-18, 29-30) is a direct reference to Wordsworth's "Daffodils" poems. William Wordsworth is a famous British poet associated with Romanticism. We'll discuss his poem and treatise for romantic poetry (partly found in the short excerpt "Emotion Recollected in Tranquillity") in class. Huxley's essay is intended to help you think about Lucy's reaction to the daffodils (why the "importation" of Wordsworth's poem, and British culture more broadly, to Antigua) is so problematic for her. Consider also the following contexts for the novel: I. Colonialism / Postcolonialism in the Americas: Historical Contexts 1492 Columbus lands in the Americas 15th 19th centurie ...

Excerpt: ... Caitlin Lovey Mark Steensland Comm 411 October 22, 2007 Chapter 9 Outline A. A Paradigm Crisis in Cultural Studies ? 1. Jim McGuigan defines cultural populism as `the intellectual assumption, made by some students of popular culture, that the symbolic experiences, and practices of ordinary people are more important analytically and politically than Culture with a capital C' 2. Nicholas Garnham states that `the project of cultural studies can only be successfully pursued if the bridge with political economy is rebuilt' 3. Consumption in cultural studies has vastly overestimated the power of consumers, by failing to keep in view the `determining' role production plays in limiting the possibilities of consumption 4. Cultural studies is accused of failing to situate consumption within the `determining' conditions of production 5. There are no longer absolutist criteria of judgment. What is good and what is bad is now open to dispute. B. The Cultural Field 1. John Fiske is said to continually sacrifice economic ...

UCSB, MUS 114
Excerpt: ... Music 114 Reading Summaries 1. "Constructing the Popular: Cultural Production and Consumption." In this article, the authors gave a general introduction to the origins of pop culture research. Pop culture typically has four meanings: objects or practices that are well-liked by a lot of people, a reference to objects or practices deemed inferior and unworthy, to work deliberately setting out to win favor with the people, or objects and practices that actually are made by the people for themselves. The study of pop culture today is typically categorized into three predominant schools of thoughts: Cultural Studies , Production of Culture, and Popular Culture Studies tradition. In Cultural Studies , pop culture is the culture of the subordinated as they actively resist their own subordination. The Production of Culture perspective focuses less attention of the various meanings of cultural texts and the process of cultural consumption than on an examination of culture as a manufactured product. Last but not least, ...

Economic agreements push toward the integration of the Mexican, Canadian, and United States economies, while immigration reform seeks to construct a wall that will ensure a clear division between the United States and Mexico. Throughout the Midwest, along the AtchisonTopeka-Santa Fe railway line there are communities established by earlier waves of immigrant workers from Mexico and in Kansas City, every September 16 in Kansas City, there is a major public celebration of Mexicos independence from Spain. This course is designed to create a background that will allow students in the United States to understand the complex background that ...
