Interesting candidates for dense storage of hydrogen include different types of carbon based nanomaterials: Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT), multi-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene layers. SWNT for hydrogen storage becomes a subject of active research. Different mechanisms for interaction of H2 and SWNTs were reported. Highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) has similarities with the carbon systems mentioned above. Photon-in, photon-out soft-xray spectroscopies are well suited for measurements of the electronic structure of these materials under ambient hydrogen pressure. This joint LBNL/EPA study has examined this option for lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The information that EPA used provides estimates of the annualized capital investment that the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors make to lower electricity use. The study also provides estimates of the electricity savings, and the value of those savings.
