Excerpt: ... Peer to Peer Search Engine Greg Grothaus, Dan Moisa {ggrothau, dmoisa}@vt.edu Abstract: This project aimed to use Peer to Peer (P2P) technology to implement a distributed search query application across multiple users and search providers. The search engine was developed to dynamically query a set of remote servers on the internet using a loose network of peers. For a concrete case study we looked at the smaller field of retail product data in querying such web services as Amazon.com and Ebay.com. We started the project by first examining already existing research in the area of P2P frameworks, in this case represented by the JXTA group. This set of open protocols aims to provide consistence, abstraction, and platform independence to P2P systems. The current implementation of this framework is provided in the Java programming language, which we also chose as the development enviroment. The second part of the project consists of the partial implementation of the JXTA framework and the specific case study. To f ...

Excerpt: ... e and containment but police work and intelligence sharing. 3. Deterrence can work against governments that are willing hosts to harboring terrorists. Eliminating access to territorial safe-havens for terrorist groups is an important aspect of any counter-terrorist campaign. For this reason I supported the war America waged against the Taliban after 9/11. But deterrence is not a useful strategy for dealing with non-state actors. Deterrence theory assumes adversaries that cohere and understand each others moves. This condition is rarely true in conflicts between states and terrorist groups, especially when the conflict engages loose network s of groups and concerns fundamental cultural values. 4. Generally speaking, good negotiators do not insult the party with whom they hope to reach agreement. Admittedly, rogue states are a special case. The designation of a rogue state is problematic. Libya was once a rogue state and appears to be in the process of shedding that label through deliberate policy. Is ...
