Lab 3 - Physical Properties (MP & BP)
Pittsburgh, CHEM 0330
Excerpt: ... uld have been due to a common impurity in ethanol solutions methanol. A lot of the time ethanol is mixed with methanol, and judging by the fact that the mixture was proven impure this was likely the case. This may also be due to other contaminations, though, such as: dilution or unclean beakers and flasks. From this, the ability to prove a pure substance pure or impure and the ability to determine what the substance is was acquired. Conclusion A simple distillation and measurement of the boiling point, via the usage of a Mel-Temp apparatus, of an unknown sample (A) was done to determine the unknown's identity. As a result, the compound was reasoned to be ethanol with some impurities. References Bandik, G, Habay, S., Rech, J., & Ward, R. (2005).
