tempest

Moravian, ENG 220
Excerpt: ... Nederostek 1 William Shakespeare starts Act 1 Scene 1 of The Tempest with "A tempestuous noise of thunder and lightening heard," which would allow many readers to assume that the meaning of the plays title to be connected with the opening storm that occurs. This happens because the Marian Webster Dictionary defines the tempest as "a violent storm". Upon further consideration, it can be seen that Webster has a second definition for tempest which is "a violent outburst" and the word tempestuous as "violent" or "turbulent". Seeing as though the storm only occurs in the beginning the play, the secondary definitions explain more about the content of the play. The character that exemplifies these definitions is Prospero. Shakespeare uses Prospero to evoke each of the different forms of a tempest, include violent and turbulent relationships with many people-especially his daughter Miranda and his two servants Caliban and Ariel. Shakespeare uses the title, The Tempest ; to not only show the storm that introduces ...

tempest response

Colorado, ENGL 2222
Excerpt: ... As Doug discussed the setting of The Tempest today in lecture, I think the piece that resonated the most with me was the relationship between European colonization and Prosperos colonization of his island. I found it hilarious when Doug said that Europeans would seek out virgin lands but would forget that people still inhabit them! Prospero maintains control of his island and he asserts control over the indigenous spirit of the island, Ariel. I feel that the European ideal is to restrict the truth from the people being colonized and to create a world that the captives must assimilate to. I think that Prospero does the same thing to Ariel. The setting is also very congruent with Dougs definition of a romantic type play with the typhoon kicking off the plot and miraculous things like Prosperos spell being cast upon the ship at sea. ...

Regis, RS 311
Excerpt: ... Renaissance and Reformation Final Exam Study Questions Two of the following four questions will appear on your final exam. The exam will be open book and open notebook. As always, the more specific your answers, the better. 1. What social and political consequences arise from the Protestant critique of Catholic authority and tradition? 2. Scholars refer to the Catholic response to Protestantism with two umbrella terms: "Counter-Reformation" and "Catholic Reformation." What is the distinction between these terms and which aspects of Catholic reform are best designated by each? 3. In what respects can it be argued that the so-called "Wars of Religion" (i.e., the French civil wars, the Dutch revolt against Spain, and the Thirty Years' War, in terms of their causes and outcomes) "were mainly about politics but also about religion"? 4. In what ways does The Tempest embody contested political and religious ideologies of the Reformation era? ...
