FERTILIZER EXPERIMENTS with VEGETABLECROPS 47 SUMMARY Results of fertilizer experiments with vegetable crops at the MainStation, Auburn, and at seven outlying points in the State are reported in this bulletin. Nine soil types and 27 different crops were involved in the study. The studies were confined to rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash and to different rates and grades of fertilizers. A major portion of the work was done at the Main Station in field bins filled with soils shipped in from several agricultural sectionsof the State. A few of the experiments at the Main Station and all of those at outlying points were conducted in field plots. Only one crop was grown each year in field plots; either two or three successive crops were grown in field bins. In all experiments certain rates of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash considered adequate to measure the requirements of each crop or group of crops were established. Plant pathogens and weeds are pests that can cause severe injury to most field and greenhouse-grown vegetable crops . A better term for IPM is integrated crop health management, which tends to broaden the concept for most people to include plant disease management. Whatever this system is called, it simply means that we use as many methods as possible to minimize problems caused by insects, mites and plant diseases. These methods include cultural, mechanical, physical, environmental, chemical (=pesticides), and biological controls. De Datta (Virginia Tech) Abstract Pests of vegetables in rice-vegetable cropping systems was monitored in three districts of Chittagong, Rangpur and Bogra at different times in as many as 14 kinds of vegetable crops : eggplant, cabbage, cauliflower, okra, tomato, country bean, yard-long bean, teasel gourd, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, ash gourd, snake gourd, ribbed gourd and cucumber. Shoot and fruit borer in eggplant and fruit borer in lady's finger were abundant. Diamondback moth was common in cabbage. Fruit fly infestation was high in teasel gourd, sweet gourd, cucumber, bottle gourd and bitter gourd. Aphids were highly abundant in country bean and tomato. The adults of the southwestern corn borer are white moths with light tan scales along the veins of the wings. The moths are about 3/4 inch long. The summer larvae are white with distinct dark brown to black spots, whereas the overwintering larvae are nearly all white in color and are without spots.
