Course Hero’s mission is a simple one at heart: to make education more accessible for students, teachers, and educators around the world. Classroom walls, campuses, or even borders shouldn’t limit the transfer of knowledge. Those that strive to give or gain a better understanding of the concepts, lessons, and histories that comprise our planet shouldn’t be left wanting as a result of inferior access or resources.
Books for Africa, the world’s largest shipper of donated books to the African Continent, strives to support a simple mission as well: to end the book famine in Africa. Wars, economic crises, poverty, malnutrition, and illiteracy plague many areas of Africa, a continent where 40 percent of school-age children do not attend school and where forty-six million children have never set foot in a classroom. Such numbers are staggering, but Books for Africa has made tremendous strides in the battle against illiteracy, and has succeeded in giving hope to millions of children through the gift of books. Their belief that education is the great equalizer in the world is one that runs through the veins of Course Hero as well, and is the reason why we have joined together to help make education more accessible both here and abroad.
Through the Course Hero Knowledge Drive, we have partnered with Books for Africa to help build a more powerful learning platform for students and a brighter future for children in Africa. With each set of academic documents a student contributes, one book will be donated to a child in Africa. This allows us to build a powerful learning community for students while providing children in Africa with the gift of education and the ability to attain a better quality of life.
Today, I am flying to Minnesota to attend the Annual Books for Africa Fundraising Gala, where James Kimoyo, Rwanda’s Ambassador to the US, and Girma Birru, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to the US, will be speaking about the importance of education and its ability to create a better quality of life for everyone involved. Hearing how the donation of books has and will continue to help build lasting institutions and economic freedom will be an unbelievable opportunity.
The power of education is unrivaled, and is something that we must put in the hands of those that seek it. I look forward to learning about what has been accomplished in Ethiopia and Rwanda, but I am even more excited to act on those leanings and implement ways to help students around the world learn, share, teach, and achieve at an even greater level.
Time to catch a plane!
(Note: I will definitely share the collection of insights, learning’s, quotes, and conversations that I gain from the two day fundraiser. In the meantime though I would love to hear your thoughts on the power of education, and the importance of providing those that are thirsty to learn with easy, unlimited access to a vast reservoir of knowledge.
