LESSON 1DEFINITIONS AND CONCEPTS IN DIAGNOSIS OF MATERNAL HEALTH1.2 IntroductionIn this first lesson, we expose learners to the concepts in diagnosis of maternal health. Learner’sunderstanding of these concepts and principles will help in prevention of maternal mortality andmorbidity. According to WHO, every day in 2017 about 808 women died due to complications ofpregnancy and child birth. The risk of a woman in a low income country dying from a maternal-related cause during her lifetime is about 130 times higher compared to a woman living in a highincome country. Almost all of these deaths occurred in low-resource settings, and most could havebeen prevented. The primary causes of death are hemorrhage, hypertension, infections, and indirectcauses, mostly due to interaction between pre-existing medical conditions and pregnancy. Maternalmortality is a health indicator that shows very wide gaps between rich and poor and betweencountries. The purpose of this lesson is to equip the learner with knowledge on determinantsassociated with maternal morbidity and mortality in order to institute prevention and controlmeasures1.2 Lesson Learning OutcomesBy the end of this lesson, you will be able to:1.2.1Articulate the concept in diagnosis of maternal health1.2.2Explain trends in maternal mortality1.2.3Describe importance of maternal health1.2.1 The concept in diagnosis of maternal healthMotherhood should be a time of expectation and joy for a woman, her family, and her community. Some die in the prime period of their lives and in great distress from hemorrhage, convulsions, obstructed labor, or severe infection after delivery or unsafe abortion. Safe motherhood can be14
achieved by providing high quality maternal health services to all women. These services for safemotherhood should be readily available through a network of linked community health careproviders, clinics and hospitals. These services could be provided at different levels including homeand health institutions.
