About: In a time where social justice and Black & Brown empowerment are needed now more than ever, this session seeks to unpack the relationship between scholarship and how it can be used in motivating actionable items. Historically it is the young who play an important role from one revolutionary cause to the next. Whether it be a young Martin Luther King Jr., Fred Hampton or Black Panther Founder Huey P. Newton, the fight against injustice is often led by those with youthful vigor to do the work, as well as a level of scholarship and “wokeness.”

Students are often eager to get involved, but lack the foresight and guidance, this is where the classroom comes in. As educators we will discuss different strategies on how to optimize the classroom experience in ways to empower student engagement in criminal justice reform, race-based policies, socioeconomics and more. We will do this by drawing on personal/professional experiences regarding social justice and find ways on how to include them in class. We will then simulate how these discussions would look like in a classroom setting, finally capping it off by discussing how these dialogues can translate into real-life, practical solutions on behalf of students and faculty.
