1B Trenham Spring 2008 – SQ1 -1- Answer Key to Study Questions Set # 1 1. Haploid; 78 chromosomes in the feather 2. Mendel’s first law is the law of segregation. This refers to the observation that in the formation of gametes the two copies of each gene segregate, such that each gamete produce has just one copy. Mendel’s second law is the law of independent assortment. Independent assortment refers to the observation that the genes controlling each trait segregate independently in the formation of gametes. If two genes are located near one another on the same chromosome, these genes may not assort independently (we call these linked genes). Genes located far apart on the same chromosome can assort independently due to crossing over or recombination. 3. The Tt plant can produce two types of gametes: T and t. It produces pollen and self fertilizes. Use a Punnett Square to determine the predicted genotype ratios: T t T TT Tt t Tt tt Genotypic ratios will be: 1 TT:2Tt:1tt; Phentypic ratios will be 3 Tall:1Short Of its 200 offspring, approximately 150 will be tall and 50 will be short. Genotype numbers will be approximately 50 TT, 100 Tt, and 50 tt. 4. ABc; Abc 5. RST; RsT; RSt; Rst; rST; rsT; rSt; rst 6.
