Christopher Hoar Mrs. Craghead English 3/29/08 Its Only Meat In the story “Carnal Knowledge”, by T. Coraghessan Boyle, Jim is the main character who likes to eat meat. He would enjoy nothing more than to enjoy a dinner of “Beef, mutton, pork, venison, dripping burgers, and greasy ribs”. (565) However, Jim’s cravings for “Kentucky Fried or Chicken McNuggets” were no match for the beauty of Alena Jorgensen. (566) Alena is an obsessive animal rights activist whom lands in Jim’s life at the perfect time, or possibly the worst. They meet while Jim is laying on the beach feeling sorry for himself because he had just turned thirty and lives a normal boring lifestyle. Jim even says that he is tired of making that same "acquaintance of a divorced computer programmer in her mid thirties with three kids and bad breath" (566) Its easy to for Jim to simply change his whole personality considering the circumstances. Jim seems like a normal human being for a good portion on the story, he seems to react normally in specific situations too. One good example would be “After dozing on
