Christopher Hoar Mrs. Craghead English 3-22-08 Life’s Irony In the beginning of the story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by author O’Connor we are depicted of a normal modern family preparing for a trip. The family is far from the most pleasant functioning family, with the secluded dad, manipulative grandmother, and ill mannered children. Most people nowadays can easily associate with this semi functioning modern day family. As the beginning of the story unfolds we are shown a scene where the grandmother is lecturing her son on the dangers of heading in the same  direction as this "Misfit. ..a loose from the Federal Pen." (457) She tries and tries every time just as  unsuccessfully as the next.  She even tries to get his attention by saying, "'Now look here, Bailey,  see here, read this, and she stood with one hand on her thin hip and the other rattling the  newspaper at his bald head." (457) The family is propelled through this story by Irony.
