file: hayek5 DOES SOCIALISM LEAD TO DICTATORSHIP? Discussion Questions on Hayek How much do we really have to worry about Hayek’s nightmare scenario? 1 Not available any real good tests of Hayek’s basic argument. 2 One problem with testing Hayek’s basic argument is that I can’t think of any democracy which has seriously even tried the kind of central economic planning that Hayek was worried about. 3 Every democratic government tries some degree of social and economic planning. 4 Some have done more than others. 5 But it is not clear to me that there is any real-world example in which a democracy has become a dictatorship because of its efforts to engage in central economic planning. 6 It is certainly the case that many democracies have been turned into dictatorships. 7 But is this because the democracy tried central economic planning? 8 Or is government involvement in the economy only one of many factors contributing to the democracy’s downfall? 9
