IntroductionStella Ting Toomey and Leeva Chung’s bookUnderstanding InterculturalCommunicationis an important contribution to intercultural communication. The book offers anuanced account of cultures. Besides, it increases the appreciation, knowledge, and skills that wecan practice as we approach everyday intercultural communication. The assumption is that withincreased globalization and demographic changes, our neighborhoods, communities, schools,and workplaces consist of people who are culturally different, hence the need for interculturalcommunication skill sets.Understanding Intercultural Communicationis divided into three parts. Part One talksabout fundamental concepts in intercultural communication. First and foremost, the authorsdiscuss why it is important to study the subject of intercultural communication. Some of thereasons they give include: adjusting to global workplace heterogeneity, adapting to domesticworkforce diversity, engaging in creative multicultural problem solving, facilitating bettermulticultural health care communication, enhancing intercultural relationship satisfaction,fostering global and intrapersonal peace, and deepening cultural self-awareness and other-awareness.Part Two explores how people communicate across cultures. Toomey and Chung beginby sharing experiences on culture shock. Furthermore, they explore the impact that both verbaland nonverbal communication has on individuals in cultural situations. Finally, the section alsohighlights the various forms of nonverbal communication i.e., physical appearance,paralanguage, facial expressions, gestures, haptics, and boundary regulations.
