Physics 107 Hauck Chapter 4 1. Speed is how fast an object is going, velocity is how fast and what direction an object is going. If a car is going a constant speed but traveling in a circle. 2. Acceleration is a change in velocity. The acceleration of gravity is about 10 m/s2. 3. Momentum is a combination of mass and velocity. Force changes the velocity which changes the momentum 4. A free-fall is falling without any resistance to slow you down. Astronauts are weightless because they are in a constant free fall in Earths orbit. 5. Newton’s 1 st law: an object moves at a constant velocity if there is no not force acting on it. 2 nd law: force=mass x acceleration. 3 rd law: for any force there is an equal and opposite force. 6. Conservation of momentum-total momentum of interacting objects cannot change as long as no external force is acting on them. Conservation of angular momentum- as long as there is no external torque the total angular momentum of a set of interacting objects cannot change. Conservation of energy-energy cannot appear out of
