Jake Terefenko History of the Middle Ages Mid-Semester Exam Section One: Council of Nicea and the Nicene Creed - The first Council of Nicea was held in Nicea in present day Turkey in the year 325. The council was called by the Roman Emperor Constantine I and was the First Ecumenical Council of the early Christian Church. The biggest outcome of this council was the first uniform Christian doctrine, the Nicene Creed. The reason for the council was to solve disagreements in the Church. These disagreements included the idea of the Trinity, the Arian controversy, and the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. The council decided against the Arians overwhelmingly, and decided on when to celebrate the resurrection, now known as Easter, which is the most important feast on the church calendar. The council decided to celebrate the resurrection on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. Benedictine Rule - The Rule of Saint Benedict is a book of rules written for monks living in community. This rule has been used by Benedictine monks for fifteen centuries, and because of this St. Benedict is know as the founder of Western Monasticism. His rule is a guide for individual communities, and even today these separate Benedictine houses are self governing. St. Benedict modeled his monasteries after the family, with the abbot as the father and monks as brothers. The rule organizes the monks’ whole day into times of prayer, sleep, spiritual reading, and manual labor. In later centuries teaching and other intellectual work took the place of farming and other manual labor.
