Wednesday February 27, 2008 Vocabulary Strategy Instruction Guidelines, Levels, and Strategies Bulletin Board : Overworked words (EX: Nice, little, cute, big, etc.) Have them look at a thesaurus to find other words that have the same meaning. Word Walls : Have common words on a wall for the children to see right there. Use the words for when they are writing stories. Introduce a new words everyday Principle to Guide Vocabulary Instruction 1. Select words that children will encounter while reading. Technical Vocabulary: words that you would see in textbook, content subjects. Ex: Science words like hypothesis, problem, conclusion, atmosphere, prediction, photosynthesis 2. Teach words in relation to other words. How words connect, not isolated 3. Teach students to relate words to their background knowledge. Environmental print; make association with things in the environment (Labeling) 4. Teach words systematically and in depth * 5. Awaken interest in and enthusiasm for words. Book Discussions! Vocabulary Levels Specific Level : the learner has a word associated with a single idea, event, or object (Recognition level) EX: “I HAVE A SCIENCE BOOK” “I drank a glass of water”
