April 7, 2008 Formal Assessments These are norm-referenced tests used to make comparisons (percentiles, etc) ACCOUNTABILITY HIGH STAKES TESTS In developing this type test, the scores are distributed along a bell-shape curve Stanines and percentiles are used to determine test performance Reliability (consistency) and validity (does test measure what it is suppose to measure?) Are important components of the standardized (formal) test Criterion- referenced Tests This is a formal test, but no comparisons are made SKILLS Test performance is measured against a criterion or a specific score. Pre-test Teaching Mastery A major purpose of this test is to determine strengths and weakness in specific skill areas Running Record- Maurie Clay Assesses fluency and self corrections Self correction = comprehending IRI- Informal Reading Inventory Diagnostic Tells you the type of errors that the child makes
