The Value of Being Helpful The purpose of my speech is to help the audience understand the value of being helpful and how it affects us and others around us. At the end of my speech I want my audience to want to do “their good deed for the day” or at least be more helpful. INTRODUCTION I. TECHNIQUE: I am going to tell a story that I read about while researching this topic about being helpful and altruism. II. The act of being helpful or altruistic is something we are born with, instinctive and we need to exercise that behavior. III. Altruism may seem like it is a good thing but it has its positive and negative effects. IV. I am going to tell the audience about: altruism, why it is good, why it is bad, and how it affects others. BODY I. What is altruism? Why is it good/ bad? A. Altruism is selfless concern for the welfare of others. It is the complete opposite of selfishness and egoism. (Webster Dictionary) B. Not all altruism is good. It can benefit some but detriment others. C. Helping and elderly lady across the street has positive affects.
