Maria Dairo November 27, 2007 Chemistry Lab Professor Lauren Denofrio/T.A Christine Knight Discussion Questions for Modern Atomic Theory 1. The demo during lecture involved lithium, copper, and sodium being dissolved in separate dishes, which contained methyl alcohol. Instantly they are set on fire and release different colored flames. Lithium gives a red color, copper is green, and sodium is yellow. The heat causes the atoms to absorb energy. The excess energy was then released into the form of light. There were colors because different energy of photons gives different wavelengths. There were different colors because the different energy of photons emits different light. 2. Energy levels are quantized due to the fact that a certain amount is allowed if a certain amount is not reached it will not go to the next level. So a staircase compared to a ramp explains this concept. A ramp in terms of energy can reach continous levels without any limits. However, a staircase limits energy in terms of steps such as a person must completely climb the step before reaching the next. The example
