COURSE SYLLABUS CONCEPTS OF SEXUALITY EDUCATION HLED 460/FALL 2007 GENERAL INFORMATION Instructor: Dr. McCarthy, Health Education Program Class Days/Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays: 11:00am - 12:15 pm Class Location: Marshall Building Room 108 Office Hours: Tuesdays: 12:30 - 4:30 pm Thursdays: 4:00pm - 5:00pm (Livonia campus) Office Location: Porter Education Building, Room 319W Phone: 487-7120, ext. 2717 or 487-0090 (School of HPHP) e-mail: [email protected] COURSE DESCRIPTION This course examines the biological and behavioral dynamics of human sexuality and sexuality education with the identification and examination of contemporary issues. Emphasis will be placed on sexuality education in the schools. Methods include lecture, small group discussion, computer applications, and student presentations. COURSE PURPOSE The purpose of this course is to provide the student with information related to human sexuality and to develop student skills in sexuality education program planning. The effectiveness of existing sexuality education programs and instructional strategies are explored and students learn to design human sexuality lesson plans. Analysis of one’s own attitudes and values in regard to human sexuality is also addressed. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the end of this course the student should be able to: 1. Understand the various influences on the development of individuals’ sexual knowledge, attitudes, relationships, and behaviors. 2. Demonstrate respect and sensitivity to others whose experience on or about issues are different from one’s own. 3. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of various sources of sexuality education. 4. Describe the types of sexuality education programs, characteristics of effective ones, and the major components of comprehensive sexuality education. 5. Develop and demonstrate a personal philosophy for curriculum and program planning based on the premise that sexual learning is a lifelong process. 6.
