A POEM AND A SHORT STORY ITS FORM, STYLE & CONTENT2When picking the two readings that I will analyze and compare, I start with what would interest me. I also think about the theme, mood and power of the short story and poem before selecting. I picked “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night” by Dylan Thomas (1952) and “A Father’s Story” by Andre Dubus (1983). “What is poetry?—namely, that poetry is a response to ordinary life experiences. But in order to write the poem, he first had to pay attention to something that was right there in front of him, allow himself to be drawn deeply into it, and then evoke (call forth) feelings and implications from it” (Clugston, 2010). I will summarize both of the stories and explain the content, form of the poem and style of both pieces of literature. When you think of poetry Bananarama said it best, “It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it. That’s what gets results”, (referenced my Matterson, S., & Jones, D. 2011). Everyone should read Dylan Thomas’s poem it is of significant emotion and power of life and death, I will talk about the poem first. The poem is telling a story, and the speaker is very much a part of the story. We eventually will figure out that the speaker is talking of his own father. The poem is very powerfuldue to the underlying emotion, at first we do not know who the speaker is talking about, there is an unknown listener, and he is definitely talking to someone. The text explains that a metaphor is“A word picture in which two things are imaginatively compared, showing how each resembles the other” (Clugston, 2010, Section 2.3). There is a metaphor in the first stanza and that would benight which means death. The setting of this poem was fuzzy at first then I realized it is of many places not just the father’s deathbed. In the poem Thomas goes from sunset to lightning bolts, green bay to the shore, and finally to the top of a mountain. I know all these places were symbols
