processes of sensory perception and compare dance cultures around the world.
A positive aesthetic response occurs when elements such as body shape, movements,
spatial design, and/or costuming meet or exceed expectations. For example, a person
aesthetically conditioned to seeing thin dancers may have a negative aesthetic response to
dances in which the performers are heavy.
The word authentic derives from the Greek authentikos, from authentes, meaning author.
Authentic suggests a claimed and verifiable origin or authorship; not counterfeit or
copied. The question of authenticity becomes important with the presentation of dances
that embody a groups cultural knowledge.
Describe the following dance events
Carnival, which means farewell to flesh in Latin, concludes on ash Wednesday,
determined to be precisely 40 days before Easter. Some of the most renowned Carnival
celebrations are in Italy, Croatia, Germany, Trinidad, Tobago, Columbia, and Brazil. In
the United States Madri Gras, which means fat Tuesday in French, also is a carnival
festival. Besides dance and music, Carnival includes feasting, revelry, and a perceived
change of identity through use of masks and costumes.
Hopi men restrain from eating and doing specific types of behaviors several days prior to
participating in Katsina Ceremonies. That, in addition to wearing heavy masks and doing
repetitive movements all day long, with only half hour intervals to rest, is a necessary
part of the transformation to become a katsina. During Katsina ceremonies, carnival
festivities, and various dance events around the world, drumming or percussive sounds
using gourds and items found in nature are a significant component.
