Review for Exam 4 ANTH 101 Fall 2007 What were the major centers where plants and animals were first domesticated? Agricultural origins can be traced to the Neolithic Age (around 8,000 B.C.). Plant domestication seems to have occurred independently in various regions possessing favorable environmental conditions and that include a diversity of habitats in a relatively small area, mild climate, abudant water and wildlife. An important center appears to be Greater Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) Where and when were the following plants and animals first domesticated, Wheat, Corn, Rice, Potatoes, Sheep, Cattle, Horses? Wheat- It was domesticated from wild forms in the Near East about 9000 years ago Corn- domesticated in Mesoamerica and then spread throughout the American continents. Maize spread to the rest of the world after European contact with the Americas in the late 15th century and early 16th century. Rice- domesticated in south Asia at least 10,000 years ago. Potatoes- domesticated by Andean peoples at least 7,000 years ago. Sheep- Sheep (10ka Middle East) Cattle- 6ka Middle East, India, N. Africa? Horses- 4ka Ukraine How did humans modify wild plants and animals in the domestication process? What traits did they select for? What were domesticated animals used for besides food?
