Unit 4. Activity 2.My Civic journeyJuly, 15, 2020Luca GiancolaCivic Reflection Issue 1- Change in Point of ViewThe civic issue I chose to study and reflect on is global warming. Global warming is the ongoing rise of the average temperature of the Earth's climate system. It is a major aspect of climate change which, in addition to rising global surface temperatures, also includes its effects, such as changes in precipitation. This issue is important because it affects the whole world and promotes more natural disasters and destroys certain areas around the world and possibly can injure people. This issue is important to be discussed and stopped because it has put many countries at risk and continues to occur. There are many people and groups who this issue is important to. Global warming should be important for all people around the world as everyone is being affected daily. Groups that take part in this issue are, Environment Canada, Greenpeace, Union and Concerned Scientists, Green House Network, The Nature Conservancy and lastly, National Wildlife Federation. All these groups take part in the fight against global warming and these groups are affected by this issue. These groups feel that this is very important to them. Many political party leaders are also affected by this issue as they are the main leaders of this issue and announce all of the horrific facts and place donations to help stop climate change. For example, the Liberal party led by Justin Trudeau introduced the Carbon Tax which is a fee imposed on each tonne of emissions from fossil fuels meant to help lower the amount of greenhouse-gas emissions. Overall, everyone is affected by this issue as we are all responsible for the future of our planet by what we do today. This should be important to all people, big or small, and perhaps most important to health and safety
groups. Many green groups including scientists are affected as they are the leaders taking charge in making a significant difference with this issue. My position on this civic issue has changed considerably throughout the duration of this course. As I have researched and educated myself on this topic, I have realized that this issue is much more serious than I thought. I always knew that taking care of our planet was important, but certainly was not aware of some of the devastating facts regarding our planet. One fact being that as we keep producing greenhouse gases our world has increased 1 degree in the last century. That may not seem like a lot but that is the home of hundreds of penguins that are now suffering with no habitat. Greenhouse gases reached a record high in 2005 and are still increasing as we speak. This is 35.4% more carbon dioxide since the late 18th century primarily because of burning fossil fuels and coal the WMO once said.
