If bubbles form, then either CO3 2- or HCO 3 - is present. o Acidic solution HCO3 - o Basic Solution CO3 2- Test for NH 4 + Mix 2 mL of the solution with 2 mL of 1 M NaOH. Suspend red litmus paper over the solution and any changes in the color of the paper will indicate the production of gaseous NH3. This shows that NH4+ was in the reactants.
