What is ionic bond? When one atom gives away electron and one takes electron, anion and cation Oxidation is? Loss of electron Reduction? Gain of electron, Oil rig What is a salt? Anion bonding with cation Why is water bent? Tetrahedral structure and has two lone pairs What kind of compounds can water dissolve? Polar or charged molecules How weak are hydrogen bonds compared to covalent bonds? Hydrogen bonds are 1/15 weaker than covalent bonds What are functional groups? Apart of a molecule that participates and facilitates in a chemical reaction that can be Acids, bases, participates in H-bond, participate in redox or be hydrophobic/philic The functional groups are? Carbonyl- Carboxyl- Hydroxyl- Phosphate- Sulfhydryl- Amino- What does hydroxyl group do? Its is highly polar, allows hydrogen bond which makes molecules more soluble in water What does carbonyl group do? Made of aldehydes and ketones, What does the carboxyl group do? COOH group, polarity and can donate a hydrogen (acid), can be ionized What does the amine group do? Has NH2 group, a proton acceptor (basic) When does the carboxyl and amine group become polar? When they Carboxyl loses hydrogen and when NH2 gain hydrogen Why are amino acids named amino-acids? Because they have Amine NH2 group and Acid which is carboxyl group bonded to a middle carbon What is a sulfhydryl group? Gives rise to disulfide bridges between amino acids What does the phosphate group do? Derived from phosphoric acid, has lots of potential energy What is a condensation reaction? Reaction where water is lost and molecule bond, (it condensates) What are the four biological molecules and their components? (chart)

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
