Metabolic Pathways that are Catabolic We will focus today on breakdown of carbohydrates, particularly glucose. We will consider the efficiency of aerobic breakdown versus fermentative pathways. In addition, we will discuss how cells extract energy out of “fuels” other than glucose. You will see how various pathways are interrelated. You should come to a good understanding of catabolic processes versus anabolic reactions and pathways. Keep in mind that these metabolic pathways are universal, occurring in just about all living organisms.
