Mental Health Exam 1: Medications Generic: Alprazolam Trade: Xanax Class: Benzodiazepine -Psychoactive drug / tranquilizer with sedative, sleep inducing, anti- anxiety, anticonvulsant, muscle relaxant properties Major Side Effects -Dizziness -Drowsiness -Lethargy Nursing Considerations -Use caution with renal/hepatic impaired pt -Hx. Of suicide attempt, drug and alc abuse, debilitated pt -Elderly pat hv inc sensitivity -Toxicity, OD Administration -PO: 0.25- 0.5mg; 2-3x daily -Cannot exceed 4 mg per day Generic : Buspirone Trade : Buspar Class : Antianxiety agent Major Side Effects -Dizziness, drowsiness, excitement, headache, insomnia, nervousness, blurred vision, congestion, sore throat, chest pain, palpitations, numbness, incoordinat Nursing Considerations -Avoid taking with ETOH -Notify HCP if any chronic abnormal movements occur - Use cautiously in patients receiving other antianxiety agents/ other psychotropics Administration -PO: usual does 20-30 mg per day (split into 2 doses) Generic : Clonidine Trade: Catapres Class: Antihypertensive -Dec severity of pain -Dec sx/sx of opioid withdrawal Major Side Effects -Drowsiness, dry mouth, withdrawal phenomenon Nursing Considerations -Use cautiously in pat with renal insuffic. -Take at same time each day -Avoid sudden changes in postion (orthstat. Hypotn) Administration -PO -Transdermal -Epidural
