Taressa Cade Scientific Communication Dr. Cole 3/31/08 Faulty communication about science to society. Increasing base knowledge about science and communication of science with all levels of society. Causes: 1. Enormous growth of scientific knowledge and its tendency toward narrower specialties. 2. General lack of success in progress toward our goal of a scientifically literate society. Average people are not well informed about basic scientific matters. In order to raise the educational base of science, communication has to start at a lower level. First instance: Hypothesis: It is known that heavier molecules than air tend to sink to the floor so it would conclude the heavy molecule chlorofluorocarbon trichlorofluoromethane, CFC-11, which is about five times heavier than air, would have great difficultly reaching the upper atmosphere. Such heavy molecules could never penetrate into the stratosphere. Flaws: 1. stratosphere is a mixture of heavy and light molecules in large air masses. Throughout the atmosphere the gaseous molecules go together in large groups, independent of molecular weight. CFC-11 and other halocarbons have been measured in the stratosphere but not all scientist were convinced. They say CFC-11 is too heavy to reach there and no measurements have been shown that CFC-11 is present in the stratosphere. Evidence: the major sources of chlorine in the stratosphere are compounds that contain both carbon and chlorine and are released at the Earth’s surface. Majority are man-made chlorocarbon compounds such as tetrachloride and CFCs. Inorganic sources from the evaporation of ocean spray dissolve in cloud droplets and are removed by rainfall, with measureable quantities reaching the stratosphere. Second instance: Hypothesis: Twenty years ago one could say that a major natural source of stratospheric chlorine is that a large amount of hydrogen chloride could b transported by the largest volcanic explosions.
