Taressa Cade Qualitative Analysis for Anions Mr. Clark 3/31/08 Qualitative Analysis for Anions Beginning question How can an anion be identified? My prediction is that by process of elimination by group, then specific anion, using the spot test by color or physical reaction, can help identify an anion. Safety Handle chemicals with care Do not inhale deeply Wear goggles at all times Avoid getting Ag on skin and clothing Use gloves Dispose chemicals properly Procedure 1. Test for CO3 : Place 10 drops of 1M Na2CO3 into a test tube. Dilute with distilled water. Add 6M H2SO4 and record results. Continue until effervescence ceases. 2. Test for S: Place 10 drops of 0.5M Na2S into a test tube. Dilute with distilled water. Dry the top with a paper towel. Add 6M H2SO4, until solution stops changing. Record. 3. Test for SO4: Place 10 drops of 1M Na2SO4 in test tube and dilute. Add 4 drops of 1M BaCl2 and mix well. Centrifuge and decant the supernatant. Add 6 drops of 6M HCl and stir. Record observations. 4. Test for PO4: Place 10 drops of 1M Na3PO4 into a test tube and dilute. Add 6 drops of 1M BaCl2 and mix well. Centrifuge and decant supernatant. Add 7 drops of 6M HCl and stir. Record and write equations of the precipitates in steps 3 and 4. 5. Test for SCN: In a test tube, mix 5 drops of 1M KSCN with 2 drops of 0.2M AgNO3. record results. Save precipitate for later comparison. Place 5 drops of 1M KSCN into a test tube and dilute lightly. Add 2 drops of 0.1M Fe(NO3)3 and record results. Dilute until test tube is nearly full. 6.
