Jansma Comm 160P Schema Theory Looks at the forms and structures that help individuals process a wide variety of information about the social world in an efficient way. Developing the way to act and what makes sense in social interaction. It suggests that people are active processors of information and that schematic thinking derives from the need to organize thinking (Wicks) Questions of “WHAT” or “HOW” Person Schema : People are generally honest/Fred hates to dress up Self-Schema : I’m a real pessimist about things/I tend to “take over” in group projects. Role Schema : Young children should be “seen & not heard”/Clerks in retail stores should be friendly and helpful. Event Schema : It is nice to bring a gift when invited to a dinner party/When you first meet someone you shouldn’t disclose highly personal issues. MOPs (memory organization packets) organize sequences of interaction/the way to conduct yourself at a wedding for example. How to act in the receiving line, ceremony, and the reception. May be part of Meta-MOPs (for ceremonies, events, celebrations) Conversation MOP = various scenes/acts put together for conversational goals Imagined interactions: Draw on Schema to see how the interaction may occur. Schemas are not only for social interaction but media channels and programming too. (You know what to expect when you go to see SAW 3) Well developed schema systems = more specific schemas to situations. (Funeral behavior with different religions being practiced) Schemas are not independent/Schemas are not set in stone they change with new information and experiences. Bookkeeping model : changes made to schemas gradually due to discrepant information and encounters. Conversion Model : a meaningful encounter with discrepant information can totally change a Schema Subtyping Model : subcategories of overall schemas are created to deal with new discrepant information. Attribution Theory Deals with commons sense way of answering ‘why questions’. Focuses on the cause of the feelings you have.
