Characteristics of Industrial Societies o Factory System o Urbanized Society: people lived next to the factory that they work in. o Interdependence: people rely on others for food, clothing etc… 1950 England finished its Industrial Revolution. Huge shift of were people lived. Changes in Family Life o People used to build the houses they lived in. o Everyone in the family had something to contribute, helped in a certain way. o In the US family farms had to be more self-sufficient, in England they didn’t need to as much because of the revolution. o For pre-industrial families, all work was house work. o When woman got married they stopped working at the factory. o Factories usually were filled by woman and children (16-22). When immigrants came from Ireland and Germany these people lost their jobs because the immigrants accepted lesser pay. o Everything was being produced on an industrial scale. o The men were the ones with most power. Changes in work life o If you get injured you basically become a beggar and or starve to death because you cant do anything. o People were not supervised very much. People worked at their own pace or the pace of nature. Factories bring a new pace, as time went on bosses
