Purpose of Experiment The purpose of this experiment is to determine the rate laws of certain reactions. We also wanted to observe how heat would affect the reaction rate. We also wanted to learn how to perform a reaction rate equation. Experimental Procedure The first thing that we did was to take out our test tubes. Then in one test tube we put in six drops of the oxalic acid, and seven drops of distilled water. Then we added one drop of potassium permanganate. Once the drop of potassium permanganate hit the solution at the bottom of the test tube we started a stop watch. We then swirled the test tube around until the solution turned from purple till yellow and noted how long the reaction took. We did this experiment two more times. Then we added twelve drops of oxalic acid and one drop of distilled water to a test tube. Then we added one drop of potassium permanganate to the solution, once the drop hit the solution we started a stop watch. Then we swirled the test tube around until the solution changed from purple to yellow and noted how long the reaction took. Then we added six drops of oxalic acid and six drops of distilled water to a test tube. Then we added two drops of potassium permanganate to the solution. Once the potassium permanganate hit the solution we started a stop watch. We then swirled the solution around until the color changed from purple to yellow. We did this two more times.
