-psychological disorder: disorder of the mind involving thoughts, behaviors, and emotions that cause either self or others significant distress -ADHD: symptoms of being easily distracted, trouble listening, always moving -medical model: treats mental disorders as physical diseases; like the same way as a broken arm is treated -DSM-IV: title of the book; like a "guide" for diagnosing psychological disorders used by clinical psychologists, counselors, and therapists -anxiety disorders: when anxiety appears when the individual tries to resist a phobia -generalized anxiety disorder: a person with GAD may feel tense, upset, jittery, etc, almost all the time, have a very difficult time relaxing, feeling muscle aches and may also be depressed -panic disorder: includes a panic attack, and these people are afraid to leave the house, afraid to be in places or situations where they would be unable to get help -phobia: I have Atychiphobia which is the Fear of failure -obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): ex.) frequently washing hands, even as far as until your skin becomes raw -post-traumatic stress disorder: stimulus that reminds of us an event or events that cause flashbacks and irritability -dissociative disorders: when this happens, the person is unable to recall certain events that happened in their lives; ex.) Someone committing a terrible crime completely forgets about the event -dissociative identity disorder (DID): ex.) person may be prim and proper one moment and then loud and flirtatious the next -mood disorders: a person with it might feel very happy or very sad for long periods of time and for no apparent reason -mood depressive disorder: more than "having the blues"; period of intense psychological pain that includes hopelessness, loss of pleasure in things that used to be pleasurable -mania: ex.) writing for 4 days straight during a manic state and believing that i wrote the greatest thing in the world, but when others look at it they may think it's garbage and don't make sense at all -bipolar disorder: swings from having period of uncontrollable, clinical mania and longer periods of depression -schizophrenia: people with it often hear voices in their head; ex) believing that you're Jesus or other prominent figures -delusions: ex) bob insists that he's a great football player who has won many awards and known as the hero of many games, even though in reality, he was never even been on a football team -personality disorders: they have personalities outside social norms and are not like other members in their society; the person accepts them as completely normal and has no desire to change their behaviors -antisocial personality disorder: formerly called sociopath or psychopath; inability to live by the rules, customs, and laws of the society in which they live
