Due next week The password for eres is yogurt • Popular education – education for the people by the people. It contains social and economic equality. Popular education is meant to keep people in their place. Education must be historic, interactive, accessible and relevant, egalitarian, inclusive, visionary, strategic, and involving the whole person. • Cultural comodification (movie in class) Cultural identify (wearing other forms of culture in America, and it’s okay, but when an actual person from that culture wears or has something that is representative of that culture, they are harassed and become embarrassed). • Martinez article • Access to resources • People having more access in their homes to the internet (many of this info were distributed through the internet). • Why are you going all the way to Seattle? – start here and don’t join them over in Seattle. • When minority groups come to the center, they were overwhelmed by the hippies (so they went back home). • As a whole, a number of people of color organizers, in retrospect, they decided to work with white people; they saw fit that they needed to learn these things as well. • From the movie: if you are truly down with the movement then show that with your actions and your behavior. If you can wear things from our culture and do things that we do in our culture, then you should be able to stand there on judgment day in front of white people and stand against white supremacy. • Ignorance is placed on those who wear the certain artifacts that the people are wearing. However, someone mentioned in class that they should target and get upset at the industries that are manufacturing these consumer goods, rather than the people who are ignorant and wearing these goods/owning these goods. 1/14/2007 Print out the list serve thing that shows that I signed up with the website. Bring scantron sheets this week (make sure I buy those tomorrow!) • Yellow Apparel • Open borders for goods, cultural/”ethnic” products,, but not for people • Cultural commondification and appropriation • Appropriating cultures of poc can also lead to/be part of appropriating struggles • Using white/US privilege well to be Effective Allies. • People in the first world, they want to be able to take and take; to see what is “trendy and fun” for that day. • We don’t want the people who are attached to those “trendy things.” The only way we do is if they are serving us. When we are used it is referred to the dominant society within the US. • Cultural appropriation – taking over and claiming that someone else’s culture is your own....
