Grace Battista Salzinger Ch. 4 a. Gendered workers are produced through various ways that work and the supervision of work is organized. Firstly of all, the factory itself is designed to be like a “fishbowl” so all of the workers on the line are visible to supervisors and all of the supervisors are visible to the manager who sits above it all in a room of windows. There are a lot of windows which contributes to the feeling of constantly being watched, by someone higher-up or by each other. The women on the line are watched by exclusively male supervisors and their performance is displayed on charts above them. Since their performance is always on display, they are motivated to do well and to improve. The women are all really feminine, wearing sexy clothing, high heels and makeup. It seemed like the women saw this portrayal of self as a way to be self confident and show that they are not shy. Dressing in this highly feminized way garners more favorable attention for workers from the supervisors constantly watching and flirting with them. Being feminine and being a good worker are tied up in each other, so this system of supervision and flirtatious interaction produces a certain gender expression for the workers. Additionally, the plant consciously sets out to hire attractive, young, childless women. Then it puts a bunch of these young women together, and the desire to be feminine
