Battista 1 Grace Battista Harvey Paper Karl Marx explains that the capitalist mode of production exists because people were separated from their means of production, creating free laborers to feed this system (Marx 1978:432). The initial separation of “...the producer from [their] means of production is called primitive accumulation, and is the “starting point” of capitalism (Marx 1978:431-432). David Harvey acknowledges Marx’s idea of primitive accumulation, but believes that it needs modification, given the proof that it still exists in contemporary capitalism (Harvey 2003:146). This redefined process Harvey dubs “accumulation by dispossession” and shows how it reoccurs in the capitalist mode of production (2003:144). Harvey explains “accumulation by dispossession” as modern primitive accumulation, and shows how this ongoing process is used as a solution to a problem of contemporary capitalism, overaccumulation.
