Lesson Title & Subject(s): “New Shoes” Point of view/ELA Topic or Unit of Study: Explain the author’s point of view and theme from the development of the main characters in the text. Grade/Level: 3 rd grade Instructional Setting: 24 students (11 girls; 13 boys) 20 students on-grade level readers 2 students are below grade level readers 2 of the students are English Language Learners and read below grade level The classroom is separated into six tables with four students at each table and the teacher’s desk is located at the back of the classroom. The front of the room has a white board where the teacher’s laptop screen can be projected to the whole class. Each student is assigned a school issued iPad. STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES Pennsylvania State Standard - CC.1.2.3. D E03.B-C.2.1.1: Explain the point of view of the author. Lesson Objective(s): Given the historical fictional story “New Shoes” (Meyer, 2016), students will be able to answer questions explaining the author’s development of the main characters of the story to support her point of view and the theme of courage while dealing with adversity. Mastery of this skill will be when each student is able to correctly answer the questions accurately and completely using proper sentence structure and grammar. The students will achieve writing two out of three correctly answered questions related to the main characters.
