1 Welcome to Physics 111N Introductory General Physics Spring 2008 Physics •Physics is the science of matter, energy, space, and time . •Physics is the most fundamental science. •Other natural sciences, like chemistry and biology , deal with particular systems whose properties obey laws of physics. •Physics is closely related to mathematics , that provides a logical framework in which physical laws can be precisely formulated and their predictions quantified. There are many fields of physics •mechanics •electricity and magnetism •heat •sound •light •condensed matter •atomic physics •nuclear physics •elementary particle physics Physics is the foundation of all the physical sciences •chemistry •geology •material science •biology… Physics is important for medicine •Magnetic resonance imaging or MRI, (2003 Nobel Prize in medicine), is based on a phenomenon called nuclear magnetic resonance (1952 Nobel Prize in physics). •X-rays (the very first Nobel Prize in physics) - were used by physicians within months of their discovery. •Radioactive tracers are also used for medical diagnosis. the list goes on and on

2 Physics and the Human Genome Project The Human Genome Project is a joint effort by the Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health - to identify all of the approximately 140,000 genes in human DNA and determine the sequences of the three billion chemical base pairs that make up the human genome. Physics is the foundation of engineering and technology •Classical mechanics is essential to civil, mechanical, and aeronautical engineering and, together with the physics of fluids and sound transmission •Electrical engineers use the physics of electromagnetism to build electric power plants and transmission lines, while electric motors and batteries power everything from medical implants to cell phones. •Radio waves and radar have revolutionized communications, making television sets and cell phones possible, but they also power the microwave oven. Physics is the foundation of engineering and technology (cont) •Thermodynamics – the way in which heat and energy are stored and transferred – was developed in the 19th century. Yet its principles remain essential to such diverse areas as refrigeration, chemical engineering, internal combustion engines, and earth science. •Heat transfer is what drives the weather, and understanding the heat balance of the Earth is critical to knowing what should be done about global warming.
