INTRODUCTIONRacism has many forms and can happen in many places. It includes prejudice, discrimination orhatred directed against someone on behave of their color, ethnicity or national origin. People oftenassociate racism with abusive or harassing acts. It need not involve violent or intimidating behavior, though. Take the name-calling racial and the jokes. Or consider cases where people might beexcluded from communities or events because of where they come from.Additionally, racism can be revealed through the actions of people and their attitudes. It canalso be reflected in the institutions and systems. But it may not be revealed at all at times. Not allracism is clear to see. For example, COVID-19 has been declared a pandemic by the World HealthOrganization (WHO). Much remains unknown, but as the virus that caused this disease has spread, misinformation and xenophobia also have spread. This has unfortunately followed a predictablepattern of connecting people with diseases. The pandemic has reinvigorated the old stereotyping of Chinese people and the perceptionsof Chinese food, including the notion that they eat pets. A US senator recently said that the "Chinesevirus" originated from a "culture in which people eat bats and snakes and dogs" his statementreflects an old belief system that links race and disease. Because we have never demolished theassumption, it's pointless to warn people to accept race as a social construct. Moreover, it is thisbelief that allows us to claim that COVID-19 is a "Chinese disease" and take some comfort inblaming them when there is no more comfort.
