Secede: (definition) to withdraw formally from an alliance, federation, or association, as from a political union, a religious organization, etc. -(significance) - The word secede has been very significant in U.S history because it caused one of the greatest wars in U.S history, Stephen Douglas: (definition) 1813–61, U.S. political leader and statesman. - (Significance) - Stephen Douglas is significant during the 1850s because he was the man that introduced the bill that caused dispute over slavery.
