Acknowledgement of Academic ResponsibilityAnswers to assignment questions must be original; that is, you must write them all yourself. You can base your answerson information in the course textbook or other sources, but if you use sources other than the textbook, you must citethem appropriately.Plagiarism is a form of academic misconduct that has serious consequences. It is your responsibility to read andunderstand the statement onAcademic Integrityin the Student Manual and theStudent Academic Misconduct Policyinthe AU undergraduateCalendar. If plagiarism is detected, and if an investigation concludes that you must rewrite theassignment, then your assignment grade will be reduced by 20 marks.“By filling in my name and ID number below, I acknowledge my responsibility to academic integrity and confirm thatnone of the wording in my answers has been copied or plagiarized in any way from any source.”Student’s name:Click or tap here to enter text.Student's AU ID number:Click or tap here to enter text.NOTE:The assignment will not be marked if it is submitted without the above two lines filled in.Assignment 1 ::Biology 235: Human Anatomy and Physiology1
Assignment 1Weight:5%Minimum Pass Grade:50%Each question is worth 10 marks.1.Maintenance of calcium ion homeostasis is critical to neurological, cardiac and skeletalmuscle function. Consider the roles of two hormones involved in the regulation of theconcentration of calcium ions in the blood. Parathyroid hormone increases the concentrationof calcium ions in the blood, while calcitonin decreases the concentration. Based on thisinformation predict the body’s response to restore calcium balance if a person swallowed100 antacid tablets made of a calcium compound in 10 minutes. Include in your answer thedefinition of homeostasis, the type of feedback loop involved and all of the components of afeedback loop.Homeostasis is defined as the process by which all body systems work together to keep andmaintain a stable internal environment (set point). Body systems respond to internal andexternal changes to keep variables within normal ranges (body temperature, body fluid, calcium ions in the blood, etc.) homeostasis regulating mechanism consist of: receptors thatreceives the stimulus i.e picks up on the problem; control center which process the problemand sends out instructions on how to fix it; and the effector which carries out theinstructions. The body’s response to restore calcium balance will be fixed using extrinsic regulations (useof hormones). The body uses a negative feedback loop to negate the increased dosage incalcium so the body is brought by to equilibrium. Parathyroid hormone and calcitonin affectstorage, absorption and excretion of calcium ions in the body.
