HRM742 Week of May 19: Course Overview and Organizational Behaviour Recap Summary Welcome to HRM 742: Business Management and Organizational Behaviour. We will refer to the course as it is commonly called -- “OB”. We will be exploring a range of inter-related topics on how people – individually and as groups -- perform and behave in the workplace. Each week we will cover different topics that connect to how people behave and what motivates their contributions in the workplace. There is a significant amount of detail in the course content and the accompanying textbook has 15 chapters, each describing specific topics. During the course we will focus on 6 learning outcomes that cross-reference each chapter topic. However, it is unlikely that we will cover every text content topic in detail. You will be provided with the key terms and concepts to study each week to successfully meet the required learning outcomes. We are all challenged with coping with a major pandemic, COVID-19. As you study behavioural research theories and applied concepts experienced in the workplace, it will be informative to have check-ins with each other to understand how organization behaviour is changing and how it will look, once this pandemic has subsided. Each week’s key learning points are included in Recap Summary, similar to this, for you to use as you build your own course reference notes. Answers to each of the questions in the steps will be posted prior to the beginning of the following week. Our discussion this week includes being comfortable with what organizational behaviour is and how it has evolved from its own area of study as well as through multidisciplinary research. OB theories provide meaningful insights to understand how best to manage people to support overall organizational effectiveness. All topics can be viewed from the individual, team and organizational level of analysis. OVERVIEW: Studying organizational behavior supports a stronger understanding of the knowledge- based Canadian workplace. Reviewing each of the topics provides direction on why people behave in different ways and how the organization is structured to manage the range of people with different behaviours. Building on the text readings in Chapter 1 and this week’s audio notes, this recap summary looks at: Why we study organizational behaviour the 4 perspectives when assessing a company’s effectiveness What are some of the historical foundations that developed 4 OB anchors How current issues are reshaping OB knowledge Downloaded by Melody Didi ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|7341441
