Artist Research Paper #3 Kehinde Wiley Kehinde Wiley is a master of hip hop portraiture. In just the few years after he graduated from college with a masters in the Fine Arts, he already made a name for himself through his unique paintings which display the heroic, opulent, and majestic representations of young, urban black men of the hip hop culture. He created his style by combining realistic portraits of random African American men with backgrounds of French and royal European patterns. He was born in Los Angeles in 1977. Growing up as an African American teenager in the 1990s in Los Angeles, Kehinde was greatly influenced by the growing hip hop culture. He went on to receive a Bachelors degree in the Fine Arts (BFA) from the San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, California at the age of twenty-two and a Masters degree in the Fine Arts (MFA) from the School of Art at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut at the age of 24. Following his graduation, he had a residency at the studio Museum in Harlem, and he quickly became known for his large colorful paintings of anonymous young black men.
