Scavenger Hunt Assignment
As I walked around my hometowns local Target I was not as shocked as I
expected myself to be due to the face that I am aware of how society represents the
“common public” and am not ignorant to my surroundings. We were assigned to look for
Barbie dolls and/or G.I. Joe action figures and/or non-Caucasian dolls, this was a hard
task to accomplish. Most Barbie dolls I found were generally white and I managed to find
two Asian Barbie/Bratz dolls, one light-skinned African American Barbie doll, and only
one African American action figure (Nick Fury of the Avengers set). When it came to
finding little girl baby dolls Target had an African American version of the Caucasian
baby doll but that was all I could find. After tallying up all of my toys that I searched for,
I found that out of the 34 different types of Barbie dolls and G.I. Joe action figures only
18% were not white. An even more accurate break down of those numbers showed that
12% were of Asian decent and even smaller were the 6% of African American decent
kids toys.
When I was on the hunt for holiday diversity cards, I did find all three specific
holiday cards on my list including Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. However, those
were the only holiday definite cards I came across. As I looked more at the cards our list
