Steven Rizzo Mrs. Kashman AP English 12/12/05 Oedipus Essay B The story of Oedipus the King is a tragic tale about a king trying to save his city from a devastating plague affecting the region. Oedipus rose to fame after solving the riddle of the Sphinx, and as a reward was given the throne. He vowed to find out the source of this plague, and to do everything in his power to stop it. This was the first step in a chain of events which led to Oedipus finding out the truth about his past; he had killed his own father, Laius, and married his mother, Jocasta. After finding out that his murder of Laius was what had cursed Thebes, he followed through on his promise of punishing the murderer by blinding and then banishing himself from the city. Yet part of the play’s tragedy was watching as Oedipus refused to believe the truth until the end, even with clear signs about his past. As Oedipus went searching for the truth about Laius’s murder, he angrily dismissed anything that pointed to him as the guilty party.
