Common indicators of emergencies include: - Unusual Sounds - Unusual Odors - Unusual appearance or behavior - Unusual Sights Barriers to action include: - Prescence of Bystanders - Uncertainty about the victim - Nature of injury or illness - Fear of disease transmission - Fear of not knowing what to do Emergency action steps are check, call, care If a condition is deemed life threatening, call EMS ASAP, four life factors of a life threating condition are: - no breathing - unconscious or trouble breathing - no sign of life - severe bleeding When deciding to call or care first; call first if; - The victim is unconscious and above 12 yrs old - A witnessed sudden collapse of a child - An unconscious child known to be at risk for heart problems Care first if: - Under 12 - Cardiac arrest - Drug overdose - Submersion To contract a disease the following must be present: - a pathogen is present - there is enough of that pathogen to cause disease - the pathogen crosses through a correct entry - a person is susceptible to that pathogen
