2 The beginning stage of reading and writing for literacy learners is such an exciting stage for students. During this stage, students develop and practice the skills necessary in order to become more fluent readers (Walden University, 2014). Although emergent readers begin practicing “The Big Five” components of literacy including: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, as well as writing, it is not until they are in the beginning stage when they practice all of the components (Walden University, 2014). In this paper, three assessments to assess beginning literacy learners in the following areas: reading comprehension, noncognitive aspects, and reading fluency will be implemented on a beginning literacy learner and the results will be analyzed. This paper will also explain a research-based practice I would use with this student to support ongoing literacy development. I chose a Second Grade student as my beginning literacy learner. This student, referred to as Sarah, is a eight-old-year girl who loves animals, cheerleading, and is very kind. Sarah comes from a low socioeconomic family. Sarah was born in Georgia along with her mother, older brother, and younger sister. She lives in a home with her mother, brother, and sister. Her mother is a single parent so Sarah and her siblings are with their maternal grandmother often. Going into Third Grade this coming year, Sarah’s summer school teacher says she is reading at grade level. Working with Sarah, I plan on assessing her reading comprehension, noncognitive aspects, and reading fluency and by analyzing the data produced, I plan on developing strategies that can better help her as a literacy learner.
